Katarina "Kate" Hanna Freeman
Overview
Affiliations: Northgard, Wanderers, Dark as Midnight
Status: Deceased
Katarina Hanna Freeman, though most in Chernarus would come to know her as "Kate", came to the lands following an old friend of hers. Kate was an inquisitive soul and wanted to find answers to things she did not understand, which led her to seek answers on her own, being deemed untrustworthy by some. Her first quest was spying on the 506th to feed information to her friend George Luz, who was recovering from an almost fatal gunshot. This would enable Kate to be the public voice for what would be the Wanderers. A few short months later, once again with many questions that she sought answers to, Kate would abandon them and ultimately betray them. Now an ex-Wanderer, she spent her days patrolling around Altar where The Scribes frequented. She also spent a lot of time hanging out at St. Joseph's, befriending Toronto and The Love Ray. The Cult of Papa was surfacing and this angered Kate, with the rage slowly consuming her. She ended up killing Toronto because she felt the Cult had corrupted him (evidenced by frequent drug use to control voices) and also to save her friend Vriska (since Love Ray had told Kate the Cult was willing to kill Vriska so Toronto would owe them something.) With the rage building inside her, this killing also proved to Dark as Midnight that she was not weak. She soon became a Warboy for DAMN and began to fall in love with Doink Doink. They went on hunting trips together, which caused friction within DAMN. Kate would become pregnant and once Harvey found out Vigil knew about this before DAMN, he would order CJ to kill the unborn baby. This enraged Doink Doink and he tried fighting back against DAMN, which led to his death at the hands of Dexter Doink, and Kate's death a few seconds after, shot by Harvey.
Appearance
Kate's appearance changed based on who she was with and who was influencing her at the moment. During her Wanderers days, she wore a black jacket, dark pants and a black armband. During her ex-Wanderers days, she wore clothing similar to Vriska as he was staying close and helping her obtain information to the many questions she had. While Kate was a Warboy for DAMN, she wore a red motorcycle helmet, a dyed red armband, red paramedic jacket, black gloves, and dark jeans. During her DAMN days, she wore a red mask, red goggles, a gray and red hoodie, dark jeans, and anarchy boots. Her style was very much influenced by her love Doink Doink.
Origins
Kate's family consisted of her mother, father, two brothers, and a sister. Her mother had died when the outbreak happened, her father's whereabouts was unknown, her two brothers were dead, and she didn't speak of her sister because she wanted to protect her. Kate was married but killed her husband in self-defense after the outbreak had happened. This led to Kate coming to Chernarus because she was escaping a cult-like community that didn't believe her about what she did. She joined the Northgard, but was only with them for a short while before finding her friends George and Zirka (who was running with George and "babysitting" him) since he was almost fatally shot. She started to spy on the 506th to get information for George, which would only be the beginning of her days investigating answers to questions that she had. She would eventually become involved with many factions, including the Wanderers, The Scribes, and ultimately, Dark as Midnight.
Demeanor
Kate was a very inquisitive person who sought answers to many questions and would stop at nothing to gain those answers. Because of this, she would often spend time alone and try to seek out the truth for herself. This led to mistrust with a lot of people as she was seen as a person who talked to many and they couldn't figure out why or if there was a certain angle. She did have quite a few close people throughout her life that helped her seek out answers, including her friends Zirka and Vriska, just to name a couple. Over time and through certain experiences, Kate grew angry and resentful, resulting in drastic actions. But she never lost the ability to stay in touch with what she was feeling, whether that was in times of curiosity or extreme rage.
Actions
I. The Ex-Northgard Kate
When Kate first came to Chernarus, she joined the Northgard for awhile, but this was short-lived. She was shot by the 506th because they thought she was a spy for Vriska, but this was a miscommunication. She ran into George Luz, whom was in hiding with slight memory loss along with Zirka, and he apologized on behalf of his faction. He took her in and she would spy on the 506th, using a teddy bear and a 506 armband as a way to talk with the faction and gain information. This would ultimately lead to the creation of the Wanderers, with George being the head of it and Kate the public voice. Kate had met her first friend during this time, Ekho, while spending a ton of time near Zelenogorsk since he was living in Pavlovo, being a part of the Pavlovo Trade Union.
II. Wanderer Kate
With the creation of the Wanderers, Kate became the public voice of the group. This was a tough role for Kate, because people kept undermining her and asking for George anyways. One day, she had visited the Dugout with fellow Wanderer Luddy and they came across men wearing yellow armbands, The Scribes. About a week later, she traveled with Luddy and Retro to Altar and during this trip, Luddy shot one of the members. Kate was confused why they shot without talking first, and they filled her in. After this incident and a little before the hurricane, Kate ran into her friend Sarah, who was now going by Jean. Jean filled in Kate about how she came to start living in Bor, explaining that The Scribes helped regain her memory. This meeting made Kate inquisitive and she needed to find out more about this and more about The Scribes. After the hurricane, she headed North multiple times to try patrol Altar. She was finding virtually no activity and came to the conclusion they must be camping in Gorka. She would hang out at St. Joseph's, a community camp, meeting those passing through and The Love Ray and Toronto. She then made it her mission to mention to many groups (including Vigil, Black Sheep, Carnival, etc.) that she was looking to speak with The Scribes. One night, during one of her patrols with Nikki (fellow Wanderer), they finally spotted a car near the radio tower. She kept patrolling for a few days after this, and one day at sunrise, while checking near the towers, two people with yellow helmets were approaching. Kate ran down the hill, hoping she hadn't been spotted. She kept watch, but radioed her family back home and alerted them that she saw about three yellow helmets nearby. The next day she continued her run around of Altar and came across a man that was dressed in plain clothes and was looking for food and medicine. She helped him out but became paranoid that maybe this was a Scribe because it was unusual to see a man with simply just a school backpack and no weapons. Retro and Georgie eventually made the trip up a couple days later and they ran into 3 yellow helmets. Two of them were shot and one was left to live with a message to pass on from George. She decided to continue patrolling the area even though the deed was done. She woke up along the coast one day, and while trying to find food and knives, she decided to wear a helmet to keep her warm. She came across a group of men wearing yellow helmets and yellow armbands. She had the sinking feeling, and she would ultimately be right; it was The Scribes. One of the men, named Dexter, said he wanted to talk and Kate along with the other men, went to the very radio tower where the shooting happened. She was interrogated about being a Wanderer and about the shootings. They let her go on the promise that there would be no more violence until there was a meeting between Dexter and George. The meeting ended up happening at St. Joseph's, and this was the betrayal, two were shot by the Scribes. Kate ran away, and with the help of her friend Jordan, she decided to carve her own path.
III. Ex-Wanderer Kate
After the betrayal, Kate found herself still patrolling outside of Altar and befriended Vriska. She also would still visit St. Joseph's, reading through the notes The Love Ray and Toronto would leave on the side of the barn. It seemed Toronto was not answering the notes very frequently. Meanwhile, one day she was patrolling as usual around Altar and a man came by. Vriska scolded the man for sleeping near the watch tower and the man took off. Kate raised her mosin and legged him, which brought her some satisfaction. Vriska relayed this to The Scribes, laughing. She then found herself in the company of Harvey, Vriska and other DAMN members one day and they came across four survivors. Kate and DAMN sprayed the survivors with bullets and once again, Kate felt a sense of relief. After these events, Kate felt the need to know what was going on with Toronto. She traveled to Oldtown and people told her that they heard Toronto believed The Cult of Papa was following him. One day Toronto showed up at St. Joseph's and was acting very strangely, though she didn't want to shoot him until she was sure of her suspicions. He kept scolding her about Vriska, but eventually left. She talked with Love Ray about what he'd do if Toronto was influenced by the Cult, and he said it'd be hard, but he'd have to put him out of his misery. Kate decided she was the one who had to put Toronto out of his misery, and did so with the company of DAMN. She went and told Peter of The Scribes what she did and that she needed to be alone, and he promised he'd keep it to himself. She grabbed a transmitter while she was there and sent out on all the radio frequencies that the Cult could no longer have Toronto, she had taken care of him. Deep down, Kate killed Toronto for a few reasons: she felt the Cult had corrupted him since he needed drugs to stop the voices, she felt she was saving Vriska because Love Ray had told her the Cult wanted Vriska dead so Toronto would owe them something, and lastly, she wanted to prove she was not weak to DAMN. Also during this time, Kate was in communication with Winslow from Vigil and Kate told Zirka that Winslow planned to kill Zirka. Zirka requested to meet up with Winslow, asking for Kate's help in doing so. The meeting happened with Shifty, CJ, Kate, Doink Doink and Winslow. Zirka admitted that she wanted to kill Winslow to Shifty, but in the end, Winslow shoots Zirka because he was coaxed on by CJ. Kate took Zirka's tan pistol and kept it to taunt Winslow, slowly plotting his death.
IV. Warboy Kate
Kate began to run around with DAMN as a Warboy after the killing of Toronto. She started to feel worry and respect for Doink Doink as he tormented her with the flesh of Toronto. She felt that the other members of DAMN were making her feel more confident about herself, even if her friends Sunny, Love Ray, and Ekho might not approve of this. She felt she was getting very close to this chaotic family and tried to convince herself otherwise. However, she was consumed by feelings of rage and resentment, along with growing feelings for Doink Doink.
V. DAMN Kate
One of the things Kate became known for in DAMN was how skilled she was at Rock-Paper-Scissors, and some were convinced because of this skill she was a cheater. Some survivors DAMN came across would need to face her, and that would sometimes dictate their fate. Meanwhile, Kate was falling in love with Doink Doink. She was convincing herself (clouded by anger) that the actions she was committing in DAMN were justified. She became pregnant with Doink Doink's baby and had told only Zirka in confidence about this. Dexter Doink had broken into Doink Doink and Kate's house, likely finding a note about this. With this possibility, Kate panicked and figured that she might as well tell people, so she had told Jean as well.
VI. The Downfall and Death of DAMN Kate
Word made it to DAMN that Vigil knew about the pregnancy before DAMN knew about it. Harvey then ordered CJ to kill the unborn baby. Doink Doink was enraged with DAMN and began to fight back, ultimately being killed by Dexter Doink. Kate watched this and was livid; questioning why he murdered Doink Doink and her answer was a bullet from Harvey, killing her a few seconds after Doink Doink had been shot.
Notable Relationships
Zirka- Zirka became a friend to Kate in her earlier days. She met Zirka when she had first met George as they were both on the run together and helping George recover from his near fatal gunshot wound. Kate would ultimately help set up a secret meeting between Zirka and Winslow.
Shifty- Shifty watched what happened to Kate back with the 506th situation and still gave her a chance. He befriended CJ and he, CJ, Kate and Doink Doink would all hang out together at times. Shifty was the one who tells CJ about Kate's pregnancy and then CJ told DAMN. After Kate and Doink Doink's death, Shifty would be the one to bury them both.
Peter- A member of the Scribes that liked Kate. She confided in him about what she did to Toronto and he promised to not tell anyone.
Vriska- Vriska became a friend to Kate when she was an ex-Wanderer and was patrolling near Altar and the Scribes. He was important to her as she felt he gave her a purpose.
Doink Doink- Originally tormenting her with the flesh of Toronto after she killed him, Kate ended up falling in love with him. They would take frequent hunting trips together and ultimately she would become pregnant with his baby.
Ekho- One of Kate's first friends that she met while she was spying on the 506th and Ekho trusted her deeply. Kate ended up shooting Ekho because he was hearing voices from the Cult of Papa.
Winslow- Kate helped set up a meeting between Winslow and Zirka, and others ended up getting involved. She wanted to help Zirka kill Winslow, but instead this backfired and Winslow shot Zirka. After the Sanctuary was attacked, Kate would hold up the tan pistol that used to be Zirka's to remind him of what he did.
Where are they now?
In never hearing from her real family and not syncing well with her other families she tried to be a part of in Chernarus, Kate wanted to make her own family with the man she became infatuated with, Doink Doink. There was friction amongst the DAMN members over this as her and Doink Doink would frequently go on hunting trips together. Once Harvey found out that Vigil knew about the pregnancy before DAMN did, he ordered CJ to kill the unborn baby. Doink Doink became enraged over this and was shot by Dexter Doink, resulting in his death. A few seconds later, Harvey would shoot Kate, leading to her death.
