Mechanics Unique to DUG
DayzUnderground (often abbreviated as DUG) is a community-modded DayZ server focused on immersive, roleplay-driven survival. While it retains the core gameplay and mechanics of vanilla DayZ, many aspects have been adjusted to create a more challenging and story-rich experience. This page outlines the key differences between the official (vanilla) DayZ experience and DayzUnderground.
The Map
DayzUnderground features a more developed map compared to the official DayZ servers. Many areas contain additional or altered structures, settlements, and environmental details. There is no official map of DUG; differences must be discovered through exploration.
Player-created maps are permitted, provided they remain consistent with the server’s roleplaying environment.
Spawning
Characters cannot travel between maps on DUG. Spawn points differ from those on official servers, and players do not always spawn facing north. This variation provides a unique starting experience compared to the official game.
Gas Zones
Logging into a temporary gas zone does not result in teleportation to safety; players remain in their current location. It is recommended to avoid logging out in areas where gas zones may appear.
There are more temporary gas zones than in Livonia (e.g. Topolin in Livonia), typically in populated areas.
Loot Economy
Loot availability on DUG differs significantly from official servers. Items are generally rarer and respawn less frequently. Certain types of loot may also appear in different locations.
There is no official loot guide for DUG, and players are encouraged to discover item locations organically. Player-created loot guides are allowed if they align with the server’s roleplay standards.
Wildlife
Dogs
Dogs can be found primarily in populated areas, though they may occasionally appear in the wilderness. Their behavior is similar to wolves: when several are killed, the remaining pack members flee. Unlike wolves or bears, dogs are safe to eat once properly cooked.
Water and Barrels
Water collection and storage differ slightly from the official game. Cooking pots can be held out in the rain to collect water, while barrels are less common overall.
Rusty barrels are a unique feature of DUG, serving as fixed dyeing stations for clothing. These barrels cannot be moved or used for storage; any items placed inside will despawn over time.
Building
Building on DUG uses a combination of vanilla and modded systems. Players should refer to the Base Building and Storage Rules for detailed guidelines.
Differences from Official
- Fence and gate kits function differently; fences cannot be converted into gates.
- Hatchets cannot deconstruct structures (fireaxes or crowbars must be used instead).
- Deconstruction takes significantly longer than on official servers.
- Garden hoes cannot dig post holes; only shovels or pickaxes can.
- Crates, gates, and fences each require 36 nails to complete.
- Spears and firewood cannot damage bases.
- Lockhammers can destroy combination locks, though the process takes several minutes.
Players should exercise caution when building to avoid becoming trapped within incomplete structures.
Modded Features
Modded building allows for the creation of both single and double doors, expanding construction options beyond those found in the base game.
Carrying Items
Inventory management on DUG differs slightly from the official experience:
- Tires cannot be carried in backpacks.
- Certain items, such as some clothing, fish, and binoculars, occupy less inventory space.
- More items can be stored in tool slots compared to official servers.
- Some items, including the mail pouch, can be equipped in the belt’s canteen slot.
These changes encourage strategic inventory planning and a more immersive survival experience.
