Overview

Group/Faction Affiliation: Northgard, Wanderers, Dark as Midnight

Status: Dead

Katarina Hanna Freeman, known to her friends as Kate, came to Chernarus following an old friend of hers. Once realizing the family this friend had didn’t suit her, she went rogue and helped form a new family; only to abandon and betray them as well months later. Kate hid with the Scribes until she let her madness consume her and joined Dark as Midnight by killing Toronto. She died to DAMN’s hands after getting pregnant with Doink Doink.

Appearance

Kate was a young, fair-skinned American with light brown hair and piercing hazel eyes. Her usual attire featured jeans and hunter jackets. Upon joining Dark as Midnight, Kate adopted an imposing look, with anarchy boots, black leggings, a dark gray hoodie, and a menacing red carnival mask that concealed her face.

Origins

Kate, a native to the United States of America, was the middle child in a family of three siblings. With two older brothers and a younger sister, she grew up in a household marked by strict rules, all under the watchful eye of their father. Kate assumed the role of protector and caregiver for her younger sister, while also offering her support to her older brothers. As time passed, Kate's family decided to travel to Poland to care for their ailing mother. It was during this period that Kate tied the knot, all while continuing to provide assistance to her siblings. However, their lives took a drastic turn with the outbreak. The family endured hardships and disputes in the wake of the chaos. Eventually, Kate chose to strike out on her own, leaving her family behind, and journeyed to South Zagoria, following an old friend who had ventured there.

Demeanor

Kate enjoyed questioning everything and everyone. She’d spend a lot of time on her own and seek out truths herself. She was selfish, honest, and always picked one person she’d strive for. That person would change depending on her goals. Eventually she grew angry and resentful, letting it cloud her judgment and actions.

Actions

I. The Ex-Northgard Kate

When Kate first came to Chernarus, she joined the Northgard for a while, but this was short-lived. She was shot by the 506th because they thought she was a spy for Vriska, but this was a miscommunication. She ran into George Luz, who was in hiding with slight memory loss along with Zirka, and he apologized on behalf of his faction. He took her in and she would spy on the 506th, using a teddy bear and a 506th armband as a way to talk with the faction and gain information. This would ultimately lead to the creation of the Wanderers, with George being the head of it and Kate the public voice. Kate had met her first friend during this time, Ekho, while spending a ton of time near Zelenogorsk since he was living in Pavlovo, being a part of the Pavlovo Trade Union.

II. Wanderer Kate

With the creation of the Wanderers, Kate became the public voice of the group. This was a tough role for Kate, because people kept undermining her and asking for George anyways. One day, she had visited the Dugout with fellow Wanderer Luddy and they came across men wearing yellow armbands, The Scribes. About a week later, she traveled with Luddy and Retro to Altar and during this trip, Luddy shot one of the members. Kate was confused why they shot without talking first, and they filled her in. After this incident and a little before the storm, Kate ran into her friend Sarah, who was now going by Jean. Jean filled in Kate about how she came to start living in Bor, explaining that The Scribes helped regain her memory. This meeting made Kate inquisitive and she needed to find out more about this and more about The Scribes. After the hurricane, she headed North multiple times to try to patrol Altar. She was finding virtually no activity and came to the conclusion they must be camping in Gorka. She would hang out at St. Joseph's, a community camp, meeting those passing through and The Love Ray and Toronto. She then made it her mission to mention to many groups (including Vigil, Black Sheep and the Carnival) that she was looking to speak with The Scribes. One night, during one of her patrols with Nikki (fellow Wanderer), they finally spotted a car near the radio tower. She kept patrolling for a few days after this, and one day at sunrise, while checking near the towers, two people with yellow helmets were approaching.

Kate ran down the hill, hoping she hadn't been spotted. She kept watch, but radioed her family back home and alerted them that she saw about three yellow helmets nearby. The next day she continued her run around of Altar and came across a man that was dressed in plain clothes and was looking for food and medicine. She helped him out but became paranoid that maybe this was a Scribe because it was unusual to see a man with simply just a school backpack and no weapons. Retro and Georgie eventually made the trip up a couple days later and they ran into 3 yellow helmets. Two of them were shot and one was left to live with a message to pass on from George. She decided to continue patrolling the area even though the deed was done. She woke up along the coast one day, and while trying to find food and knives, she decided to wear a helmet to keep her warm. She came across a group of men wearing yellow helmets and yellow armbands. She had the sinking feeling, and she would ultimately be right; it was The Scribes. One of the men, named Dexter, said he wanted to talk and Kate along with the other men, went to the very radio tower where the shooting happened. She was interrogated about being a Wanderer and about the shootings. They let her go on the promise that there would be no more violence until there was a meeting between Dexter and George. The meeting ended up happening at St. Joseph's, and this was the betrayal, two were shot by the Scribes. Kate ran away, and with the help of her friend Jordan, she decided to carve her own path.

III. Ex-Wanderer Kate

After the betrayal, Kate found herself still patrolling outside of Altar and befriended Vriska. She also would still visit St. Joseph's, reading through the notes The Love Ray and Toronto would leave on the side of the barn. It seemed Toronto was not answering the notes very frequently. Meanwhile, one day she was patrolling as usual around Altar and a man came by. Vriska scolded the man for sleeping near the watchtower and the man took off. Kate raised her mosin and legged him, which brought her some satisfaction. Vriska relayed this to The Scribes, laughing. She then found herself in the company of Harvey, Vriska and other Dark as Midnight members one day and they came across four survivors. Kate and DAMN sprayed the survivors with bullets and once again, Kate felt a sense of relief. After these events, Kate felt the need to know what was going on with Toronto. She traveled to Oldtown and people told her that they heard Toronto believed The Cult of Papa was following him.

One day Toronto showed up at St. Joseph's and was acting very strangely, though she didn't want to shoot him until she was sure of her suspicions. He kept scolding her about Vriska, but eventually left. She talked with Love Ray about what he'd do if Toronto was influenced by the Cult, and he said it'd be hard, but he'd have to put him out of his misery. Kate decided she was the one who had to put Toronto out of his misery, and did so with the company of DAMN. She went and told Peter of The Scribes what she did and that she needed to be alone, and he promised he'd keep it to himself. She grabbed a transmitter while she was there and sent out on all the radio frequencies that the Cult could no longer have Toronto, she had taken care of him. Deep down, Kate killed Toronto for a few reasons: she felt the Cult had corrupted him since he needed drugs to stop the voices, she felt she was saving Vriska because Love Ray had told her the Cult of Papa wanted Vriska dead so Toronto would owe them something, and lastly, she wanted to prove she was not weak to DAMN.

IV. Warboy Kate

Kate began to run around with DAMN as a warboy after the killing. She started to feel worry and respect for Doink Doink as he tormented her with the flesh of Toronto. She felt that the other members of DAMN were making her feel more confident about herself, even if her friends Sunny, Love Ray, and Ekho might not approve of this. She felt she was getting very close to this chaotic family and tried to convince herself otherwise. However, she was consumed by feelings of rage and resentment, along with growing feelings for Doink Doink.

V. DAMN Kate

One of the things Kate became known for in DAMN was how skilled she was at Rock-Paper-Scissors, and some were convinced because of this skill she was a cheater. Some survivors DAMN came across would need to face her, and that would sometimes dictate their fate. Meanwhile, Kate was falling in love with Doink Doink. She was convincing herself (clouded by anger) that the actions she was committing in DAMN were justified. She became pregnant with Doink Doink's baby and had told only Zirka in confidence about this. Dexter Doink had raided Doink Doink and Kate's house, finding a note about this. With that being discovered, Kate figured that she might as well tell people, so she had told Jean as well.

VI. The Downfall and Death of DAMN Kate

Word made it to DAMN that Vigil knew about the pregnancy before DAMN knew about it. Harvey then ordered CJ to kill the unborn baby. Doink Doink was enraged with DAMN and began to fight back, ultimately being killed by Dexter Doink. Kate watched this and was livid; questioning why he murdered Doink Doink and her answer was a bullet from Harvey, killing her a few seconds after Doink Doink had been shot.

Where are they now?

Never hearing from her real family and leaving others she tried joining, Kate decided she wanted to make her own family with the man she grew madly insanely in-love with. This caused friction between her and Dark as Midnight as she took Doink Doink on her little hunting trips. When word that the Vigil knew of her pregnancy before DAMN, Harvey made it a point to teach her a lesson by having CJ shoot the unborn baby. This caused Doink Doink to enrage as he fought against DAMN, leading to his death and then Kate’s only seconds later.

Notable Relationships

Zirka

Zirka became a friend to Kate in her earlier days. Amongst everyone, Zirka stood as the one who never wavered in her belief in Kate. She forgave her for everything and continued to offer her unwavering support, a constant presence in her life. Eventually Kate would attempt to repay that favor by setting up a meeting to kill Winslow.

Winslow

Winslow initially sought to rescue Kate from a perilous and downward spiral, hoping to steer her away from a path of darkness and insanity. However, their roles soon reversed, with Kate revealing to Winslow just how cruel and unforgiving the world could truly be.

Vriska

Vriska became a close friend to Kate during her time as an ex-Wanderer, patrolling the area near Altar and the Scribes. He held a significant place in her life, providing her with a sense of purpose and direction.

Doink Doink

Originally tormenting her with the flesh of Toronto after she killed him, Kate ended up falling in love with him. They would take frequent hunting trips together and ultimately she would become pregnant with his baby.

Ekho

One of Kate's first friends that she met while she was spying on the 506th and Ekho trusted her deeply, forming a strong bond between the two. After a difficult decision, Kate ended up shooting Ekho for what she thought was him hearing voices from the Cult of Papa.
